Microsoft Edge Survival Guide

Unfortunately when working on Windows 11 I sometimes find myself enable to use Vivaldi which has been my browser of choice for years.

The three key features I need for best desktop web browsing experience are:
  • Vertical tabs
  • Workspaces
  • Ctrl + Tab to go the previous tab
I like to work with Chromium based web browser so I was not planning on using Firefox. Google Chrome does not support vertical tabs or workspaces out-of-the-box. Microsoft Edge however does support both vertical tabs and workspaces. Sadly its Ctrl+Tab behaviour is the same as Chrome and it just switches to the next or previous tab in your tab list which is of no use to me. Not sure who thought this implementation made any sense.

Fortunately I came across that fantastic Tab Thumbnail Switcher extension which is altering the Ctrl + Tab behaviour to use the Most Recently Used (MRU) list instead of the tab order. Meaning when you do Ctrl + Tab it switches to the last tab you were looking at. Note that Tab Thumbnail Switcher from autocontol.app is a native extension that will only work on Windows.
