AVM FRITZ!Box Survival Guide

After years of loyal service my trusty AVM FRITZ!Box 7590 had to retire following a serious battlefield injury. In fact it started to emit a disturbing coil whine prompting me to investigate. I quickly noticed it was overheating and the 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi was not working anymore.

Using an older 7490 I could sort out my network quickly. Then decided to upgrade to Wi-Fi 6 and got myself an AVM FRITZ!Box 7590 AX. I could have gone for the newest Wi-Fi 7 FRITZ!Box 7690 model but it was not available and it has one fewer RJ-45 port for some reason.

Anyway it took me a while to setup all that and I just wanted to write down a few tips about it.

Factory reset your FRITZ!Box

If for some reason you can't access your box configuration pages anymore through RJ-45 connection and pointing your browser to fritz.box then your best option is to reset your box. You'll need a DECT phone which you can easily connect to your box using its hardware keys and handset settings menu. Once you are sure your handset is connected to the correct box you want to reset just dial #991*15901590* as explained there. Your box will soon reset.

Backup and restore

You can conveniently backup and selectively restore settings from your box through the System > Backup page. I find it most useful notably to preserve your Smart Home devices configuration.
